RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
