The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
