Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
