Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
